Somewhere in a closet or under a bed, there’s a guitar case that hasn’t been opened in a while.
Maybe it was a gift. Perhaps the band was the one that almost happened. You still play now and then, but the strings feel dead and it never quite sounds right anymore.
Whatever the story, that guitar still has options. It can be sold, pawned, traded toward something new, or brought back to life with a little professional care.
At Pawn Central, musical instruments are one of our specialties, right alongside gold and silver. With stores in Clinton, Iowa, and Galesburg, Rock Island, and Macomb, Illinois, we help local musicians buy, sell, pawn, trade, and repair their gear.

What Can You Do With a Guitar You Don’t Play?
Musical instruments can hold real value, and there’s more than one way to put that value to use.
Sell it. If you’ve moved on from an instrument, selling it can turn it into cash and give it a second life with a new player.
Pawn it. If you need short-term cash but want to keep your instrument, a pawn loan lets you use it as collateral. We offer loans against guitars, amps, drums, keyboards, and other equipment. Getting a loan from Pawn Central will never hurt your credit.
Trade it. Dreaming of a different guitar? Trade in the gear you have and put that value toward the instrument you really want.
If you’re weighing those choices, our earlier post, Buy, Sell, or Pawn? Smart Ways to Get More Value at Pawn Central, breaks down how each one works.
More Than Just Guitars
Guitars may be the first thing people think of, but our inventory covers much more. Musicians can find:
- Electric, acoustic, and bass guitars
- Amps
- Drums
- Keyboards
- Violins
- Horns
- Pro audio equipment
That variety is good news whether you’re a beginner looking for a first instrument or a working player looking to add to your setup.
You can see more in the Musical Instruments section of our General Merchandise page.
Tips for Bringing In an Instrument
A little preparation can help you get a clear, fair evaluation.
Wipe it down. A gentle cleaning helps an instrument show its best condition. Avoid harsh cleaners on finishes or fretboards.
Bring the extras. Cases, gig bags, straps, cables, and power supplies can make an instrument or amp more complete. Bring what you have.
Know what you have. If you know the brand, model, or year, share it. If you don’t, that’s okay. Our staff can help.
Be honest about issues. A buzzing fret or a scratchy volume knob doesn’t mean the instrument has no value. Many of those problems can be fixed.

Shopping for a Pre-Owned Instrument
Buying pre-owned can be a smart way to get quality gear without paying full retail price.
When you shop, it may help to:
- Play it if you can. How it feels in your hands matters.
- Listen for problems. Crackling knobs, buzzing frets, or dead spots are worth asking about.
- Look at the neck and frets. Check for obvious wear or damage.
- Ask questions. Our team is happy to talk gear with you.
And remember, many instruments that feel a little off just need a proper setup. That’s where our repair service comes in.
How Do You Know If Your Guitar Needs a Setup?
Guitars are made of wood and metal, and both react to time, use, and changes in temperature and humidity. Even a well-made instrument can drift out of adjustment.
Here are a few signs it may be time for a checkup:
- The strings feel high off the neck. If it’s hard to press chords down, the action may need adjusting.
- Notes buzz. Buzzing can come from fret wear, low action, or other setup issues.
- It won’t stay in tune up the neck. If open strings sound right but chords higher up sound off, the intonation may need work.
- Knobs crackle or cut out. Scratchy pots and loose jacks are common electronics issues.
- Tuners slip. Worn or loose hardware can make tuning a constant chore.
- The strings are dull or rusty. Old strings can sound flat and feel rough.
None of these problems has to mean the end of a guitar. Many are routine fixes.
A Gift for the Musician on Your List
Pre-owned instruments and gear can also make thoughtful gifts. A first guitar for someone just starting out, a new amp for a player who’s outgrown theirs, or a setup for a well-loved instrument can all be meaningful.
If you’re shopping, stop in and talk with our staff about what might fit the person you have in mind.
